Two administrators at the University of North Carolina Wilmington are under investigation after they discussed how some diversity, equity and inclusion concepts are embedded on campus despite a systemwide ban on the ideology, according to a recently released video filmed surreptitiously.
The two-minute edited video released by Accuracy in Media, a conservative activism group, shows two employees discussing how there’s been some shuffling of staff and the use of different terminology in the wake of the ban.
“They’re trying to be a little bit sneaky, I feel like, with certain things in the plan. We didn’t have to fire anybody or lay off anybody, as they were really reassigned,” said Asher Persin, center coordinator for the Mohin-Scholz LGBTQIA+ Resource Center at UNCW, in the video.
When asked about “antiracism” efforts, Persin said it’s a word that is not going to be part of the “verbaige” during trainings anymore. “It will have to be renamed,” asks the undercover AIM journalist, who sounds like a female in their 20s. “Yes,” Persin responded.
Persin, who uses they/them pronouns, according to their online bio, made the comments despite the University of North Carolina Board of Governors banning DEI offices and programs systemwide in May 2024.
UNCW’s media relations and communications specialist Sydney Bouchelle told The College Fix the employees in the video are under review.
“UNCW is aware of a video alleging regulatory noncompliance by university personnel. We take such matters seriously, the employees’ actions are under review, and the leadership team is taking immediate action to look into these matters further,” Bouchelle said via email.
This is the fourth undercover video released by AIM throughout June of videos taken during the 2024-25 school year in which campus officials admit to similar DEI efforts while they are being secretly recorded.
A timestamp on the UNCW video states September 2024. Another video in the series shows pumpkins on an employee’s desk, making it appear that these videos might have been filmed sometime in the fall and winter. AIM began releasing their edited clips this month.
The other three videos were filmed at Western Carolina University, UNC Asheville and UNC Charlotte. The three officials featured in those videos are no longer employed by the schools, campus officials have told The College Fix in interviews this month.
When asked by The Fix to whom these campus employees believed they were speaking to,
AIM President Adam Guillette said “a fellow radical.”
In August, UNCW announced it was closing its Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and that staff would be provided other opportunities in different divisions.
In the undercover video, Ashlee Fleming, coordinator of the Upperman African American Cultural Center, said that positions were eliminated, but really “newish positions” were created.
Persin said: “No you didn’t fire anybody. But let’s be clear on like who’s actually working the DEI stuff now.”
Fleming and Persin did not respond to requests for comment.
Guillette told The Fix that “North Carolina’s university system has clearly been captured by ideological radicals who focus more on indoctrination than on education.”
“Multiple investigations are still coming from North Carolina, along with dozens of additional investigations from half a dozen other states,” he added.
