Two pro-Palestinian student groups have been officially suspended by the University of California Los Angeles following a vandalism and demonstration outside the private home of Jay Sures, a regent.
Students for Justice in Palestine and Graduate Students for Justice in Palestine at UCLA gathered last week outside of Sures’ private home. UCLA told the campus newspaper that the campus will not tolerate violence.
“Whenever an act of violence is directed against any member of the university community, UCLA will not turn a blind eye,” UCLA told the Daily Bruin. “This is true no matter what group you are a member of — or which identities you hold. There is no place for violence in our Bruin community.”
“Jonathan Sures, you will pay, until you see your final day,” the student newspaper reported, based on an email from Chancellor Julio Frenk.
Sures supports Israel. He runs a talent agency that represents Bret Baier, Anderson Cooper, and others, according to the NY Post. SJP called him a “virulently zionist capitalist” in an Instagram post.
During a meeting earlier this week, members of SJP laughed about the attack.
?BREAKING : @UCLA has suspended Students for Justice in Palestine for alleged misconduct against UC Regent Jay Sures.
I don’t know why this is considered “alleged” because they openly admitted and joked about it during the UC Divest Mass Orientation on Monday night. pic.twitter.com/NVvKEig54y

The group also talked about “disrupting” pro-Israel events on campus during its planning session earlier this week.
The February 5 attack happened in the morning last Wednesday.
According to the Daily Bruin:
The protest, organized by Graduate Students for Justice in Palestine at UCLA, began before 7:30 a.m [on February 5]. Protesters put red handprints on Sures’ garage door and caution tape throughout his front yard. A rain-soaked paper sign lying on the street hours later said “divest now, or you will pay.”
Around 50 protesters participated in the demonstration, a Testudo Guard Private Security worker said. Sures said his family was “rattled” by the protest but declined to comment further at the time.
Despite this, the activists claimed they were actually the victims.
“The UC’s hypocrisy is clear, and we will not be intimidated,” the groups wrote on Instagram. “Our demands have yet to be met. We may have been suspended, but Palestinians pay for liberation with their lives. Keep eyes on Palestine.”
