Colleges celebrate Valentine’s with ‘ethical porn,’ abortion ‘party’ and ‘Genital Diversity Gallery’

Meanwhile, new government report shows widespread concerns about campus sex ed ‘misinformation’

It’s Valentine’s week, and there is no shortage of bizarre and morally troubling campus events about sex and relationships again this year.

In many cases, university health centers and “reproductive rights” groups celebrate “sex week” at the same time. This year’s events include education about “healthy hookups” and an abortion “party.”

Here are some of the lowlights:

Students at Northeastern University kicked off the week on Monday with a “Medication Abortion Launch Party.” The event celebrated the private Boston institution’s decision to start providing abortion drugs on campus. No love for unborn babies there, it seems.

Meanwhile at Ohio State University, its Student Advocates for Sexual Health Awareness is hosting a “Kink 101 presentation” on Saturday. Earlier this week, it also held a panel discussion on “healthy masturbation and ethical porn.” This is a public, taxpayer-funded university.

Another one of those, the University of Michigan, has a “Healthy Hookups” table set up throughout the week. Students can visit the display to discuss “What does a healthy hookup look and/or feel like for you?”

Then there’s Tulane University. “Sex week” at the private Louisiana school includes “Condomgrams” and a musical performance, “A Capella Groups – Songs About Sex.”

Tulane also is hosting a “Genital Diversity Gallery” – an “interactive and educational exhibit designed to promote sexual health, body positivity, and empowerment.” Not sure if I want to know what the “interactive” part involves.

Speaking of, it’s difficult to know just what to say about this Instagram video of a dancing — ummm — from the University of California Riverside’s Golden ARCHES “peer health education group.”

At first glance, an innocent mind may think it’s just a child’s stuffed animal – but read the caption. It’s the first-place prize for winners of a “Kiss & Tell Trivia” event.

The university also has a “Jolly Trolley” set up with banana, strawberry, and vanilla flavored condoms, free for the taking. UCR is a public, taxpayer-funded university, by the way.

Other notable mentions include a “Radical Self Love” art display at Colorado State University (Doesn’t anyone remember “love is not self-seeking”?). And a “Condom Caravan” by West Virginia University’s Office of Wellness & Health Promotion, likely paid for by our tax dollars.

This last one isn’t that bad, but it caught my eye. Harvard Women’s Center is advertising a Feb. 14 celebration on Instagram that includes the traditional Valentine’s Day essentials – plus one. See if you can spot it.

Interestingly, the U.S. Government Accountability Office just published a report on sex and reproductive health care in higher education.

One of campus health staffers’ chief concerns? “Misinformation”:

“Officials and health educators at some colleges described additional misconceptions that some students held, such as that the HPV vaccine caused infertility; condoms were only needed to prevent pregnancy; heterosexual students did not get STIs and therefore did not need to get tested; and that multiple condoms should be used simultaneously. Representatives we spoke with at one of the professional organizations said misinformation about sexual and reproductive health care among students was increasingly common.”

I wonder why. Maybe, just maybe, have they considered a little less flippancy and a little more respect for sex and commitment? Marriage and Family Week, anyone?
