As potential Republican 2012 presidential candidate Gary Johnson walked in 30 minutes late to his scheduled talk in the MUB last Wednesday, he had two words for the audience: “No Excuse.” By the end of the discussion, it was clear those two words would also have suited his assessment of something else: federal government spending.
“My entire life, I’ve watched government spend more than it takes in,” he told around 40 students in the town-hall style meeting. “I find myself outraged over the fact that we’re bankrupt.”
The visit by Johnson, sponsored by NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) and YAL (Young Americans for Liberty), signals the rising relevance of the 2012 New Hampshire Republican primary while also providing a clue of the major issues that will define that campaign. The primary will occur in either January or February early next year.
“We have to ask ourselves, is what the government is doing necessary?” UNH junior Nick Murray, the leader of both NORML and YAL, said.
